Dr Behnam Akhavan, an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow and Senior Lecturer of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, heads the Plasma Bio-engineering Research Group at the School of Engineering and the Hunter Medical Research Institute.

He obtained his PhD in Advanced Manufacturing from the University of South Australia in 2015 and has held postdoctoral positions at esteemed institutions, including the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and Fraunhofer Institute of Microtechnology in Germany, and the University of Sydney.

Dr Akhavan’s pioneering work in plasma processes to modify surface properties has garnered recognition, leading to innovative applications in diverse fields such as healthcare, electronics, and environmental science. He is celebrated as one of Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers by Engineers Australia.
