HMRI Heart and Stroke Research Showcase

Community participation is an important part of medical research and it is critically important we design research studies that are going to have an immediate impact on the community as a whole.

If you have lived experience with stroke or a heart condition, or you work or research in these areas, we invite you to come along to this free engagement event where you will have the opportunity to connect and collaborate to help shape meaningful research that are driven by consumer involvement.

Sessions will cover:

  • The latest in heart and stroke research, featuring Professor Doan Ngo;
  • Hear from consumer research partner Brenda Booth OAM, and participate in an interactive workshop on consumer engagement.
  • Take a breather with Morning Tea, then dive into a reflection on the morning workshop and a getting to know one another session. This will be a fantastic opportunity to connect, discuss, and contribute to the ongoing conversation about heart and stroke research.

Lunch is on us, providing a chance to mingle and chat.

The event will run for half a day according to the following schedule:

9:00-9:05 Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country

Session 1

9:05-9:15 Professor Doan Ngo; Heart and Stroke Program research overview and examples of how consumer engagement facilitates timely translation of research.

9:15-9:30 Brenda Booth; Lived Experience Researcher; Narrative of journey through the research landscape and how people who have heart or stroke conditions can inform research;

9:30 – 10:30 Interactive workshop on how to engage in meaningful consumer engagement at every level of the research pipeline. Facilitated by the HMRI Community and Consumer Involvement Team.

10:30-11:00 Morning tea

Session 2

11:00-11:15 Reflections from the morning workshop. Researchers and consumers share what they learned.

11:15-12:15 Getting to know one-another and how we can work together. Researchers, clinicians and people who have heart or stroke conditions share their experiences, journeys and goals with each other in a facilitated session.

12:15-1:00 Lunch and networking.

1:00 Event concludes.
