This project will design and trial a primary school program to develop sports skills and improve key aspects of physical fitness including stamina, leg strength and balance as well as encouraging healthy eating in 8-10 year old Hunter children. By improving skills, children will find physical activity more fun; they will reduce their risk of becoming overweight, improve bone mass, and reduce their risk of ankle injuries. Two aspects of nutrition will be promoted to complement the physical activity training - drink more water and less sugary drinks, and eat healthy snacks such as fruit. This study will provide an opportunity for a young Hunter researcher to enhance their research skills, as a number of current and trainee teachers will be up-skilled to teach sports skills in primary schools.
One third of Australian children are not sufficiently active of good health and this is particularly true of children from disadvantaged schools.
