Discover the exciting world of medical research that takes place at the Hunter Medical Research Institute at the 2014 HMRI Open Day.
The Open Day will be held on Friday July 4th and will begin at 1pm.
Simply turn up to enjoy all the below activities, and if you would like to join us at the Cocktail Party, you can register and pay on the day at the HMRI Information Booth! See you there!
Interactive Research Expo: The expo will be open between 1:00pm -5:00pm
Take part in the interactive expo displays, both children and adults will have the opportunity to get involved and learn about some of HMRI’s life-changing research, including radiology tests and models, a toxicology booth featuring poisonous Australian insects, a women’s health booth, Computer based cognitive testing, Cancer Clinical trial and biobank information, an exciting kids corner plus much more.
Kids Corner: Sessions will run from 1:00pm-4:30pm
Discover the research that lies behind HMRI’s doors as we hold our second Open Day. Take part in some kids science experiments, make edible ‘DNA’ models, touch ’n’ feel the live expo displays and enjoy a healthy kids training session. For mums and dads there’s also research information sessions on kids’ health and nutrition, asthma and more.
Behind the Scenes High School Tour: 2:30pm-4:00pm
Would you like to become a medical researcher? We invite you to come along to the HMRI Open Day and be part of our special behind the scenes session for high school students who are interested in an exciting career as a researcher.
Join us for an information session hosted by our young researchers where you will hear about pathways from high school into research and about what happens in the day in the life of as a researcher. You will also be invited to take a behind the scenes tour of our cancer laboratory and the clinical trials centre where you will see real experiments taking place.
The free behind the scenes tour will begin at 2:30pm. Registrations are encouraged, book your place now!
Research Laboratory and Clinical Trials Centre Tours: Sessions will run between 1:30-4:30pm
Tour the state of the art Cancer and Pregnancy laboratories to see where the future of medical research lies. You will also have a chance to visit the new HMRI Clinical Trials Centre and learn first hand from our researchers about the different trials happening at HMRI that are benefiting the Hunter community right now.
Tours will leave from the level 4 atrium approximately every 20 minutes.
Research Information Sessions: Sessions will run between 1:00pm-4:30pm
Hear about the latest therapies and research discoveries from a series of HMRI’s leading researchers who will provide a 20 minute snapshot research information session in cancer, stroke, dementia, asthma, nutrition, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.
Q+A Research Debate: 5:30pm-6:30pm
Join us for a Q & A debate with seven of the Hunter’s top researchers who will answer and debate a series of questions and topics from the audience.
This year Prof Phil Hansbro, A/Prof Vanessa McDonald Dr Kym Rae, Prof Clare Collins, A/Prof Jeanette Lechner-Scott, Prof Rodney Scott and
Dr Nikki Verrills will be on the panel.
Registrations are free and encouraged.
Meet-the-researchers at our cocktail party: 6:30pm-8:00pm $30
Finish off the day at the special meet-the-researcher cocktail party. This is an exclusive ticketed event that will allow community guests to meet with the researchers one-on-one. Enjoy a quiet drink and canapes and take the chance to ask the region’s leading experts about the health and medical research that interests you.
