Professor Manohar Garg – Reducing cardiovascular disease with dietary supplements

Jun 1 2010

Professor Manohar Garg from the University of Newcastle is conducting research to find novel and simple ways to reduce cardiovascular disease using dietary supplements in everyday foods.

Professor Manohar Garg
Professor Garg and his team demonstrated that concurrent dietary supplementation with phytosterol-enriched spread (Logicol) and long chain omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) lowers blood lipids in a complementary and synergistic manner, providing greater risk reduction against cardiovascular disease than either of the supplements alone.

This has the potential for the development of novel functional foods (such as margarine, breakfast cereals, milk, yogurt, etc) fortified with the two ingredients for safe and efficacious means of lowering blood lipid levels, and therefore the risk of cardiovascular disease.
