Global Health Research

Maternal Mortality Rates in Kenya

Members of the Public Health Program are using Demographic and Health Survey data to research the continuing high Maternal Mortality Rates in Kenya in collaboration with colleagues from Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya and the Aga Khan University, Nairobi Kenya. The research focuses on those factors which determine whether mothers do or do not engage a skilled birth attendant at the time of birth, an important determinant of maternal outcomes at the time of birth. Maternal and infant health is a priority for many of HMRI Public Health PhD students from all over the world.

Tuberculosis Patients in Bangladesh

Research on why Tuberculosis patients in Bangladesh with Multi-Drug Resistant TB are delayed in accessing effective treatment, with a particular focus on the health systems constraints, is being undertaken with colleagues from BRAC University in Bangladesh. The research is identifying key Health Policy and Health System factors which must be addressed to ensure these patients are able to access effective care.

Health Care Response for Ageing Populations

Publich Health researchers work with the World Health Organisation to analyse data and provide evidence for better health care response for ageing populations, across the Western Pacific Region, in Africa, and globally.

Randomised Controlled Trials

Research on the effectiveness of garlic extract in reducing arsenic toxicity in a pilot Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) is being carried out in Bangladesh. Researchers have conducted a number of large studies on non-communicable diseases including prehypertension and hypertension, prediabetes and diabetes, Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis, smokeless tobacco consumption and climate change. Researchers recently conducted a pilot RCT to determine the effectiveness of zinc supplementation among pre-diabetic patients in Bangladesh.
