Dr Kylie Bailey | Clinical Psychologist

What are your research interests?

I am interested in researching psychological interventions for mental health and alcohol and other drug issues. I am also interested in researching comorbid mental health disorders and developing/ identifying interventions that help address these multiple symptoms. The treatment approaches that I research include both face-to-face and online/telehealth delivered interventions.
I am currently investigating SMART Recovery groups, a telehealth intervention and health promotion strategies for alcohol and other drugs.
I have also developed training for health care workers (medical and allied health) in communication skills, alcohol/substance and comorbid mental health assessment and training. I have developed health education training funded by our local Primary Health Network, NSW Ministry of Health and both the Pharmacy Guild and the NSW Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
I currently collaborate with Griffith University and The University of Sydney.

Why did you get into research?

I was inspired by my supervisor, Professor Amanda Baker to start conducting research. I also want to contribute to evidence-based practices to enhance treatment outcomes in people with mental health and alcohol and other drug issues. I also want to improve the reach and therefore access to mental health and drug and alcohol interventions to regional and rural Australians.
I also want to improve the quality of addiction and mental health care delivered by health care workers.

What would be the ultimate goal for your research?

My goal is to enhance the delivery of effective treatment to people with mental health and alcohol and other drug issues. To reduce the stigma of this patient population and improve the reach and access of mental health/addiction care to regional and rural populations. My vision is evidence-based mental health/addiction care that is accessible by people when they need treatment/support.
