HMRI Art Series Commission
Your art can help tell the story behind our life-changing research
The HMRI Art Series celebrates scientific innovation through the power of artistic expression
Each year, HMRI partners with a talented artist to celebrate the career and achievements of the HMRI Award for Research Excellence recipient through a unique commissioned original artwork.
The 2026 Art Series will honour the 2025 Award winner, with the commissioned piece auctioned at HMRI’s premier fundraising event, the HMRI Gala Ball, to raise vital funds for medical research.
Expressions of Interest are now closed
For the first time, we’re opening the HMRI Art Series Commission to expressions of interest from artists who wish to partner with HMRI on this unique opportunity. This is more than just a commission – it’s a chance to leave a legacy that combines artistic expression with community impact.
With past artists including the likes of Dino Consalvo, Mitch Revs, Brett McMahon, Melissah May and Brittany Ferns, the HMRI Art Series presents the opportunity for artists to tell the stories behind life-changing research.
The Brief
The selected artist will be asked to create a commercially appealing 2D original work in any painting medium such as watercolour, acrylic and oil, that is inspired and pays hommage to the work and career of the HMRI Researcher of the Year. The work may draw inspiration from any aspect of the awardee’s career, from scientific breakthroughs to broader contributions to the community and society.
From discovery scientists to surgeons, HMRI’s past Researcher’s of the Year represent a diverse cohort of leading medical researchers who have profoundly contributed to transforming the health and wellbeing of our community.

The Opportunity
The commission will be the centrepiece auction item at one of the Hunter’s prestigious fundraising events – the HMRI Gala Ball, in June 2026.
The artist will also have the opportunity to have their work profiled as part of the partnership across social media, traditional media and at premier events attended by HMRI supporters, community leaders and researchers.
This is also an opportunity to create a work that has a meaningful purpose and be part of something that gives back to our community, with proceeds from auction directly supporting medical research here in the Hunter New England region.

The Commission
The commission fee is $2,000 and generously supported by Chris and Shirley Piggott
Costs for consumables and framing will be paid for by HMRI.
HMRI Art Series sponsors Chris and Shirley Piggott with 2021 HMRI Researcher of the Year, Professor Michael Breakspear and artist Melissah May with her work ‘Seahorse’.
