Distinguished Laureate Professor Nick Talley AC is currently the Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health at the University of Newcastle. He is an expert clinician, educator and researcher, with extensive experience as a leader in the medical and university sectors.

Professor Talley holds a formal adjunct appointment at the University of North Carolina and has previously been affiliated with the Mayo Clinic and Karolinska Institute.

A neurogastroenterologist with a strong track record, he has been funded by NIH in the past and is currently supported by NHMRC. His research focuses on subtle gut inflammation, the microbiome, and unexplained gut symptoms.

With over 1000 peer-reviewed papers, Professor Talley is one of the most cited and influential clinician-researchers globally. He is the Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia and has authored influential textbooks, including Clinical Examination and Examination Medicine.

In 2014, Professor Talley was inaugurated as one of the first 15 Fellows of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and was elected to the Executive of the Academy. His previous roles include consulting staff at Mayo Clinic, Chair of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, and Foundation Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, Nepean Hospital.

Currently, he is a Senior Staff Specialist and gastroenterologist at John Hunter Hospital. He is a Fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians, and the American College of Gastroenterology.
