Dr Róisín Griffin is the Data Coordinator for the ROADMAP clinical trial within the University of Newcastle and the HMRI Infection Research Program. She also holds a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position with the HMRI Infertility and Reproduction Research Program.
Her research aims to improve fertility outcomes in equine and livestock species, with the broader goal of enhancing breeding animal welfare.
Dr Griffin began her scientific career at the University of Limerick, completing a Bachelor of Science in 2012, followed by a Master of Science by Research. Her master’s project, which modelled the growth of Thoroughbred foals, sparked an interest in the power of utilising large datasets to uncover meaningful biological patterns and inform animal management practices. This interest laid the foundation for her transition into reproductive research and led her to pursue a PhD at the University of Newcastle. Under the supervision of Dr Zamira Gibb and Distinguished Emeritus Professor John Aitken, her doctoral work explored the molecular drivers of stallion fertility, with a particular focus on the impact of exogenous stressors on sperm function and DNA integrity.
Her postdoctoral research continues to examine how endogenous and exogenous factors influence sperm quality, particularly through oxidative damage and impaired DNA integrity. She has also contributed to the development of novel methods for assessing sperm fertility potential. This data-driven approach to led to her current role as Data Coordinator for the multi-site ROADMAP clinical trial. Herein, she works closely with database developers to ensure the trial database functions as intended, and supports sites in the accurate and complete collection of clinical data across all trial centres.
