We are pleased to share that we are establishing a joint Clinical Trial Support Unit (CTSU), through a partnership between the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), to service the broader clinical research ecosystem across our region. This collaboration represents a significant investment in enhancing clinical research capacity, improving trial efficiency, and enabling high-quality, patient-centered research that benefits our communities.

As part of this exciting growth, HMRI is recruiting a Clinical Trial Nurse Manager to support the establishment and operation of the HMRI Clinical Trial Facility, and contribute to the expanded clinical trial infrastructure to support increased activity across the ecosystem.

About the Role

The Clinical Trial Nurse Manager plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of clinical trials across all therapeutic areas. This position provides clinical nursing oversight, manages trial coordination practices, and leads a multidisciplinary team to deliver studies that meet ICH GCP, regulatory and governance standards.

Working closely with the Head of Clinical Trials, the Clinical Trial Nurse Manager will oversee trial feasibility, start-up, conduct and close-out, ensuring participant safety, data integrity and operational excellence across the lifecycle of each trial.

You will join a collaborative, supportive and forward-thinking team committed to advancing research that transforms healthcare in the Hunter New England region.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Nursing & Leadership

  • Act as the single point of accountability for clinical nursing within the facility.

  • Lead, support and develop a team of clinical trial nurses and trial coordinators.

  • Ensure all clinical trial activities are performed safely and in compliance with protocols, SOPs, ethical standards, ICH GCP and governance requirements.

  • Oversee participant assessments, safety monitoring, documentation, and resource planning.

  • Review protocols for feasibility and operational requirements.

  • Manage facility resources, equipment, consumables and rosters, including flexible or extended hours as required.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Build strong working relationships with clinicians, investigators, sponsors, monitors and internal HMRI/HNELHD teams.

  • Provide clear communication, coaching and feedback to staff, fostering a high-performance culture.

  • Prepare written guidance, protocols and operational information for researchers.

Training, Education & Quality

  • Ensure clinical staff are well trained in assessment procedures, documentation standards, and data integrity.

  • Identify training needs and support ongoing professional development.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement and quality initiatives to optimise trial delivery.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe working environment and uphold participant safety as the highest priority.

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, quality frameworks and best-practice clinical trial methodologies.

About You

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (AHPRA).

  • At least 12 months of management or leadership experience.

  • Strong knowledge of ICH GCP, regulatory requirements, and the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework.

  • Demonstrated experience managing clinical trials in line with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and manage staff in a clinical or research environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in early-phase clinical trials.

  • Prior management or supervisory experience in a clinical setting.

HMRI affiliation is open to individuals who are active in, wish to grow their capability in, or support health and/or medical research; and who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Employed by HMRI and actively participate in research;
  • Employed by Partner Organisations;1
  • Research Higher Degree Students (PhD or Masters by Research) at the University of Newcastle2
  • University of Newcastle Conjoint or Visiting Academic.

Individuals who previously met the above criteria, but no longer do, and wish to remain connected with HMRI may do so as HMRI Alumni.

1. The University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Local Health District and Calvary Mater Newcastle.
2. Undergraduate and Honours students and RHD students not enrolled at the University of Newcastle are not eligible for affiliation.
