Professor Michael Breakspear is Global Professor of Neuroscience and Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle and plays an important strategic role in the growth of basic and translational neuroimaging across the HMRI and University of Newcastle campuses.
He is Group Leader of the Systems Neuroscience Group, an independently funded team of postdoctoral Fellows, PhD students, Research Assistants and data scientists.
He is a consultant psychiatrist at Awabakal Aboriginal Medical Service and a Specialised Coordinator of Training (Scholarly Projects) in the Hunter New England Mental Health Service.
Professor Breakspear has a highly recognised international reputation in systems neuroscience and translational psychiatry, and has made major contributions to our understanding of epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and dementia.
