HMRI supporter Jennie Thomas and stroke researcher Mark Parsons scooped two of eight categories in the annual University of Newcastle Alumni Awards that were announced on Wednesday night.

Life Governor Jennie Thomas and Associate Professor Mark Parsons, director of the HMRI Stroke Research Program, were honoured as past graduates of the University.

The awards recognise professional excellence, innovation, creativity, exceptional leadership and those who inspire others in a range of fields through local, national or international service.

Clinical neurologist Mark Parsons was jointly awarded the Alumni Medal with Professor David Currow from the Cancer Institute NSW.

As a major financial supporter, Mrs Thomas was recognised with the Alumni Award for Exceptional Community Service.

HMRI Director Michael Nilsson congratulated both recipients: “This is wonderful recognition for two very deserving people, who have both made significant contributions to medical research in the Hunter,” he said.

* Associate Professor Mark Parsons is Senior Staff Specialist in Neurology, John Hunter Hospital. HMRI is a partnership between the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and the community.
