Neuropathic pain is a complex, chronic and debilitating pain that often accompanies diseases such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, peripheral nerve injury and stroke. Our understanding of neuropathic pain is poor and as such is difficult to treat.

This study will employ state of the art CLARITY and light sheet microscopy to build the first 3 dimensional map of the neurons involved in neuropathic pain. The 3D map will then be quantified in a model to understand the specific role these neurons play in the development of chronic pain, with the hope that an improved understanding of the mechanisms of chronic pain will lead to the development of more targeted treatments.
