Presented by HIC Services, Art for Impact is a biannual event that celebrates the powerful connection between art and science, bringing together local artists and leading researchers to support vital medical research.

Held at Earp Distilling Co from 13–15 March 2026, this exciting new chapter for Newcastle’s creative and research communities features three days of exhibitions, conversations, and the signature Long, Long Luncheon. Every artwork auctioned directly funds research projects across the Hunter, helping prevent, treat, and cure diseases that affect our community.

Opening Night

March 13, 2026 – 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Meet some of the Hunter’s most talented artists and be the first to view a collection of 70+ artworks that are up for auction as part of HMRI Art for Impact.

Draw and Pour

March 14, 2026 – 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Unwind, sip and get creative at a relaxed life drawing experience, guided by Newcastle artist, Holly Turner, whilst raising funds for medical research at HMRI.

Long, Long Luncheon

March 15, 2026 – From 12:00pm

Settle in for an unforgettable long-table dining experience that brings together art, community, and purpose. Enjoy exceptional local food and wine, live entertainment, culminating with the conclusion of the HMRI Art for Impact Auction.

Calling all artists!

We’re inviting artists to contribute an original artwork to be auctioned during the Art for Impact weekend.

This is your chance to join a powerful collaboration where creativity fuels world-class medical research, and your art can directly help prevent, treat, and cure diseases affecting families across the Hunter and beyond.

Artists receive up to 50% of the sale price at auction, with the remainder supporting vital research at HMRI. All works will be showcased online and at our series of events across the weekend at Earp Distilling Co, connecting you with collectors, supporters, and community leaders.

FAQs

The HMRI Art Series is an annual initiative that commissions a unique artwork to celebrate the achievements of the HMRI Award for Research Excellence recipient. The artwork is auctioned at the HMRI Gala Ball to raise funds for medical research at HMRI

The call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) is open to professional artists with experience in painting or mixed media. Artists should be able to create an original work that reflects the award winner’s achievements.

EOIs open 15 September 2025 and close on 14 November 2025.

Minimum size: 600 x 600mm; maximum size: 900 x 1200mm, painted in a medium such as watercolour, acrylic, or oil; may include minor elements of drawing or printmaking, must be original, not AI-generated, and not previously exhibited. Should be commercially appealing and suitable for public display.

The artwork should reflect the research achievements and impact of the 2025 HMRI Award winner. Artists have considerable creative freedom to explore the theme through colour, texture, movement, media, or other creative forms.

Yes. Prior to developing the concept design, the selected artist will meet the 2025 HMRI Award winner to understand their work and ensure the artwork meaningfully reflects their achievements.

Displayed at the HMRI Ball (and other events at HMRI’s discretion) and auctioned to raise funds, reproduced as framed prints, gift items, and other promotional materials for donors, featured in HMRI communications, reports, and marketing to showcase the artist’s work and the partnership.

Yes. HMRI encourages artists to consider sustainable practices and innovative use of materials in creating their artwork.

The total commission fee for the project is $2,000, payable in installments according to the project timeline.

Concept design submitted and accepted: 31 January 2026

Creation of the artwork: Stage 3 – April 2026

Delivery and installation of the artwork: Stage 3 – May 2026
