Establishing a screening test for complement activation in patient blood samples

Establishing a screening test for complement activation in patient blood samples

We are inviting healthy adults to provide a blood sample that we can use to establish a normal reference range for a potential new diagnostic test.

The aim of this study is to establish if a new test we have developed can detect increased complement activity.
Complement is a family of proteins that form part of our immune system. Usually, the complement system turns on when the body senses invading microorganisms, but sometimes it can turn on in patients with certain medical conditions even when there is no invading microorganisms. Right now there are no simple tests to identify increased complement activity in a blood sample. In order to determine if our new test will be useful, we need to know the baseline level of complement activity in people who are not sick.

Healthy adults aged 18 – 80 years.

You will be asked to provide a single blood sample of 16mL (approx. 3 teaspoons) from a vein in your arm.  The following information about you will be collected:

  • Your age at time of consent
  • Your gender

If you would like to participate in the study, please contact the Principal Investigator
