World-leading medical research is taking place at the $90 million Hunter Medical Research Institute, officially opened today by Greg Combet, Member for Charlton.

Many people have contributed to the evolution of the HMRI into a leading medical research institution.

The Institute’s research will contribute to improved health care nationally and internationally.

Mr Combet said the facility will co-locate biomedical and clinical researchers who will extend medical knowledge and translate it into better health outcomes for our community.

“This building is full of promise for people everywhere,” he said.

“Within it some of our finest medical researchers will conduct their work in close collaboration with others in vital Hunter institutions including the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital.”

“It will improve their collaboration, bring together research programs, improve clinical trials and laboratory work. It will build on great achievements.”

“The Gillard Labor Government understands that if we are to build a better future for Australians, we need to make a considerable investment in the necessary medical research infrastructure.”

“That is why the Government has provided $48.5 million toward this building. But it is more than bricks and mortar. Buildings are where people work, where ideas, policies and decisions are fostered that shape our world. Buildings are about people, and their potential.”

This facility builds on the great job opportunities in health services and medical research.

More than 450 researches will come together to work in the HMRI building and it will contribute an additional $180 million into the Hunter economy.

It will assist Hunter researchers to continue delivering research of national significance and maintain a standing on the international stage.
