Dr Benjamin Piper is a clinical researcher being a principal investigator in both national and international trials. He is also an editor for the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Journal, the official journal of the Australian Society of Anaesthesia.
Alongside these academic interests Dr Piper teachers medical students, junior medical staff and has been a departmental scholar role supervisor for the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
Benjamin completed his anaesthesia training with a fellowship at the St George Hospital in Sydney and has spent 4 years working at the Royal Darwin Hospital developing specialist skills in high risk obstetric anaesthesia, vascular, thoracic, paediatric and neuroanaesthesia.
He was the clinical lead in developing cardiac surgical services in the Top End and supported a new cardiac electro-physiology service in both public and private sectors. During this time, he also provided consulting services to the high risk anaesthesia clinic and high risk obstetric service. Dr Piper was the Chair of the Northern Territory transfusion committee developing massive transfusion, critical bleeding and trauma guidelines.
In addition to hospital based specialist medicine, Dr Piper has worked in aeromedical retrieval medicine with both the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service and Careflight NT over a period of 5 years. He has also completed a post graduate diploma in clinical ultrasound, with advanced skills in transthoracic and transeosophageal echocardiography.
