Carlos Garcia-Esperon is a stroke neurologist and currently the Director of the Acute Stroke Services at the John Hunter Hospital (Newcastle). He completed his clinical training in his hometown of Spain before undertaking a fellowship in Switzerland and Australia.
Whilst completing his training in Australia, Carlos discovered he had a passion for research, and he finished his PhD at the University of Newcastle in 2020 in the field of brain imaging in acute stroke. His main area of research interest is access to stroke care in rural areas.
While Carlos works primarily at the John Hunter Hospital, he also performs telehealth consults for patients in areas such as Manning Valley, Tamworth, Armidale and Moree.
He has been engaged in more than 40 acute stroke clinical trials and has published over 100 journal articles.
He was awarded the Hunter New England research fellowship in 2020, and his research resulted in a finalist position in 2018 and 2020.
In 2019, Carlos’s research won the Hunter New England High-Value Healthcare Awards (Health Research and Innovation category).
