Dr Michael Merakis is a dedicated researcher focusing on neurosurgical trauma and injury prevention. His interest in these areas stems from a unique childhood experience growing up in a residential service where his parents worked. Interacting with residents who had acquired brain injuries and mental illness left a lasting impression on him.
During medical school, Dr Merakis became fascinated by the complexities of brain injury and neurotrauma, recognising the gaps in current medical knowledge. This realisation fueled his commitment to researching traumatic brain injury to improve outcomes and prevention strategies for individuals affected by such conditions.
The ultimate aim of his research is to deepen the understanding of traumatic brain injury and cerebrovascular disorders, advancing treatment options and preventive measures to mitigate the profound impact these conditions can have on patients’ lives.
Looking ahead, Dr Merakis plans to continue his research into the functional outcomes in traumatic brain injury. He is a registrar at Hunter New England Local Health District, a post-graduate student at the University of Newcastle, and a member of the Trauma Research Group at Hunter New England Health.
