Dr Peter Howley, formerly a Professor of Statistics at the University of Newcastle until 2022, has been actively involved in collaborative healthcare research since the mid-1990s. His contributions span the design, analysis, and reporting of healthcare studies, from individual Advanced Training Research Projects to large-scale clinical trials.
Peter’s expertise lies in healthcare systems evaluation and improvement, statistical process control, and statistical modeling. He specialises in designing and assessing public health and clinical strategies to advance healthcare management locally, nationally, and internationally.
His work has informed policy and driven improvements through comprehensive strategies, including integrating national clinical indicator and healthcare accreditation systems, enhancing methods for analysing and using clinical data, and designing innovative healthcare practices.
Peter has collaborated across health, government, education, and industry sectors to improve systems and outcomes including with Taipei Medical University/Taiwan Health to improve health systems, and the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards on national clinical indicator reporting. He has also collaborated with Macquarie University on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) research, as well as with Hunter New England Health, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and HMRI on a variety of projects.
In addition, Dr Howley is committed to workforce development, particularly in quality improvement and systems thinking. Over his career, he has co-led over $3 million in successful grants and has an extensive publication record, garnering over 1,000 citations (h-index: 18, i10-index: 24).
