Biography

Professor Stephen Smith graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1993. He completed general surgical training in 2001, including a year at Adenbrookes, Cambridge UK and completed Colorectal CSSANZ Fellowship in 2003 with stints at RPA, Sydney and Royal Melbourne and Western, Melbourne. In 2005, he completed his Masters of Surgery at Sydney University.

Professor Smith is a colorectal surgeon at John Hunter Hospital and a Conjoint Professor at the University of Newcastle. His research and work focuses on improving peri-operative management of surgical patients – particularly surgical oncology.

The bulk of Professor Smith’s research is in the form of randomised clinical trials that are designed to enhance the recovery of patients undergoing surgery - particularly oncological colorectal surgery.
