We know that premature babies are more susceptible to poorer health and wellbeing outcomes than babies born at full term. Our team aims to improve these outcomes.

So many babies are born too soon, and sadly this can lead to greater complications including heart failure, kidney failure, poorer social and economic outcomes, and disability.
If a woman goes into preterm labour, doctors currently have limited options to stop the birth process or keep the baby in the womb for longer. Our researchers see a future where we can better predict the likelihood of a premature birth, and develop precision medicine approaches for mothers to deliver their baby at full term.Â
Through global collaborations, the BorneHMRI team is delivering life-changing research to help identify women at higher risk of preterm birth.Â
By translating this latest research into treatments and care for tomorrow, BorneHMRI are making a real difference to the lives of babies, mothers and families impacted by premature birth.
BorneHMRI was established out of the devastating personal experiences of Sarah and Dean Mumm, former Australian Wallabies captain.
Dean and Sarah have given birth to 6 children, 4 of whom were lost due to preterm birth. They are passionate about ending preterm birth so that no other parents go through their experience.
We need to stop parents losing their children.
By raising awareness and vital funds for preterm birth, Sarah and Dean are giving their six children a voice and creating a legacy for good out of a devastating situation.
“There’s also the fact that 80% of babies who are born preterm have disabilities – just because they didn’t stay in the womb long enough. In this day and age, and with so many medical breakthroughs, it is just crazy people still have to go through this.”
