Research Programs

Professor Jenny Bowman (MClinPsyc; PhD) is a tenured academic in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Newcastle; providing leadership in research, teaching, and engagement.

Current roles include acting Head of School, and recently served roles include Faculty Assistant Dean Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Deputy Head of School (Research Training), and Research Integrity advisor for the university.

Professor Bowman’s teaching and research expertise is health psychology, health behaviour change and implementation science. Specifically, their research focuses on achieving physical heath equity for disadvantaged population groups and particularly improved chronic disease preventive care and improved care for cardiovascular disease health risks, for people with a mental health condition.
Professor Bowman has particular expertise in co-development approaches to building the capacity of health and community organisations to address the modifiable chronic disease health risks of disadvantaged population groups, and integrating preventive care into health and community settings.

Professor Bowman leads a research team and collaborative research program which has contributed to recognition of the physical health inequity experienced by people living with complex mental health as a priority area for research, and achieved policy and practice change. In the past 5 years, they have authored 40 peer-reviewed publications and been awarded two MRFF grants as CIA ($2.5M) on projects focused on building capacity of service organisations in chronic disease preventive care.
Professor Bowman’s conduct of clinical trials in mental health inpatient settings have demonstrated efficacy of capacity-building interventions, and increased provision of evidence-based preventive care (implementation effectiveness).
