Implementation scientist and Perioperative Researcher

Key research focuses include reduced fasting before surgery, the reduction of postoperative gastrointestinal complications; postopeartive nausea and vomiting and the de-implementation of unwarranted / low value perioperative care practices

Dr Oya Gumuskaya is a senior lecturer at the Western Sydney University, School of Nursing and Midwifery. Dr Gumuskaya completed a master’s and a PhD in Surgical Nursing while developing her career from clinical experience to research and education, collaborating internationally in research, education, and nursing leadership. Having gained experience in cardiovascular surgery, from the theatre to intensive care, she studied perioperative communication, patient experience and safety, reduced fasting, and prevention of postoperative complications. Her passion for perioperative care excellence drove her research focus to implementation science and de-implementing unwarranted practices.
