Congratulations to HMRI and University of Newcastle researcher, Professor Philip Morgan, who was awarded the 2011 Leadership Award, presented by the University of Newcastle and FordComm.

The award, announced at the recent Chancellor’s Dinner, recognises emerging young leaders in business and the community.

Professor Morgan, 37, received a $10,000 scholarship to provide education and training opportunities to develop his leadership skills.

The Hunter researcher’s work has had a major impact on community health, demonstrating that evidence-based programs can reduce the burden of disease and improving the quality of life for families.

His ground-breaking Healthy Dads, Health Kids program has received national and international recognition, and is currently being implemented in Singleton, Muswellbrook and Maitland thanks to generous support from the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund.

As part of the selection process, finalists were asked to make a three-minute presentation on ways to improve the future of the Hunter for the benefit of its community.

Professor Morgan said that his vision for 2020 was a healthier Hunter community, both physically and mentally.

“I believe access to quality education, gender equality and physical activity are the vehicles for contributing to change,” he said.

“It’s nice to be recognised for something I am truly passionate about, something that is really making a difference in the community.

“The scholarship affords wonderful opportunities to further develop my leadership skills.”
