Behnam Akhavan is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, where he leads the Plasma Bio-Engineering Laboratory across the School of Engineering and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).

His research sits at the intersection of plasma physics, surface engineering, and biofabrication, focusing on developing plasma-enabled technologies for implantable medical devices, advanced biomaterials, and biointegrated systems. He is internationally recognised for pioneering plasma processes that address long-standing challenges in biointerface engineering.

He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 4000 citations and an h-index of 38, in leading journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, and Progress in Materials Science.

His research has received national and international recognition and has been featured in mainstream media, including ABC, Science Daily, and EurekAlert, reflecting its translational impact. He is recognised by Engineers Australia as one of the nation’s Most Innovative Engineers.
