Dr.Eric Wegener is a Radiation Oncologist at GenesisCare in Newcastle, NSWand a Conjoint Associate Lecturer at the University of Newcastle.
With a sub-specialist focus on Genitourinary (GU) oncology, he is dedicated to advancing precision medicine through the integration of artificial intelligence and advanced radiotherapy techniques.
Dr.Wegener completed his specialist training in 2022 (FRANZCR) and subsequently undertook a Genitourinary Research Fellowship. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle, where his research focuses on innovative strategies in prostate radiotherapy, including Dominant Intraprostatic Lesion (DIL) boosting and AI-driven biomarkers.
A figure in Australian oncological research, Dr. Wegener is prominently involved with the ASTuTE Clinical Trial, a multicentre implementation study evaluating the use of multimodal AI (MMAI) biomarkers to guide androgen deprivation therapy decisions. His leadership in this field was recognized with the 2025 NSW Premier’s Award for Outstanding Cancer Research (Cancer Control Innovation). He has also published significantly on “virtual” High-Dose-Rate (HDR) brachytherapy boosting, including the 5 year results from the PROMETHEUS trial.
Dr. Wegener is an active member of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology Genito-Urinary Group (FROGG) and the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG). He is committed to evidence-based, patient-centered care, ensuring that cutting-edge research translates directly into improved clinical outcomes for men with prostate cancer.
