Research focuses in stem cells, organoids and mucosal diseases

Dr Gabriela Araujo Hoefel is a postdoctoral researcher and Deputy Theme Leader for the Stem Cells and Organoids in Mucosal Diseases research theme at the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
Originally trained as a Biomedical Scientist in Brazil, she moved to Australia to pursue a PhD in Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Newcastle, driven by a passion for advancing research in respiratory diseases.

Since beginning her postdoctoral role in 2022, Dr Hoefel has used cell culture techniques with human bronchial and nasal epithelial cells to study inflammation mechanisms linked to asthma. She has also focused on using organoid models to better understand and develop personalized treatments for Cystic Fibrosis. With a strong background in cell culture and molecular biology, she brings both technical expertise and translational insight to her research.

Dr Hoefel is particularly interested in how stem cells and organoid technology can be used to tailor therapies to the individual needs of people living with Cystic Fibrosis.
