Matthew Kolasinski is a Lecturer and PhD Candidate at the University of Newcastle, combining academic research with practical healthcare delivery to advance early intervention fall prevention.
His PhD research, “”Balancing Act: Early Intervention to Prevent Falls in Midlife: The ‘Future Proof’ Approach,”” investigates exercise interventions that enhance balance, strength, and cognitive function in middle-aged adults before falls become inevitable.
Matthew’s research employs a three-study methodology: a systematic review and meta-analysis of exercise interventions (currently analysing 40 randomised controlled trials); cross-disciplinary clinician surveys evaluating current practice patterns; and a community-based intervention trial comparing functional training with traditional gym-based approaches. This work addresses a critical healthcare gap by targeting the 40-64 age bracket when balance decline begins but prevention programs are not yet offered, with potential for significant long-term impact and healthcare cost savings.
With over a decade of clinical experience as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist with NSW Health, Matthew has specialised in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and falls prevention programs across the Hunter region, bringing essential real-world insight to his research design and implementation strategies.
As Associate Lecturer and Placement Coordinator at UoN, Matthew coordinates the Student-Led Exercise Physiology Clinic and oversees practical placements for Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science and Master of Exercise Physiology students. He has significantly expanded placement opportunities, creating pathways that have led to numerous successful employment outcomes and strengthened university-industry partnerships throughout the region.
