Professor Nathan Bartlett

From a young age, Nathan Bartlett was captivated by viruses, finding them “pretty cool but a bit scary.”

Today, as a prominent viral immunologist, he spearheads research at HMRI that could shield us from an array of respiratory viruses, while also helping to shape the minds of young scientists from his classroom at the University of Newcastle.

His journey is the realisation of a childhood dream.

In the heart of Geelong, in Regional Victoria, a young mind found fascination in the intricate world of viruses. Nathan’s journey from a curious child to a world-renowned virologist is an inspiring tale of passion, dedication, and the profound impact of scientific exploration.

Bartlett’s trajectory into the realm of science was shaped by an early influence – his mother.

From his earliest days, she recognised a future scientist in the making. With an inherent love for nature documentaries and an innate fascination with the natural world, his path seemed clear even during his formative years. By the time he reached early high school, Bartlett’s conviction was solidified: a career in science was his destiny.

Fast forward to today, and Professor Nathan Bartlett’s journey, interwoven with rigorous education and groundbreaking research, has culminated in his role as a leading virologist at HMRI.

But, like most medical researchers, the road was paved with dedication and a relentless pursuit for answers to complex health problems.  Nathan’s love of science took him on a global voyage.

From an early-career scholarship at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong, to postdoctoral research stints at Oxford University and Imperial College London, his focus on unraveling the mysteries of viruses never wavered. It was during these formative experiences that Bartlett delved into the intricate dance between viruses and the human immune system – a dynamic that would shape his career’s trajectory.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic wrought seismic changes across the scientific landscape.

For Bartlett, it spotlighted a significant shift in societal perceptions towards science and medical research. The pandemic underscored the rapid responsiveness of science in addressing global medical challenges in real-time. The invaluable role of medical science in enhancing the quality of life, often taken for granted in pre-pandemic times, was thrust into the spotlight, as was Professor Bartlett.

As the world witnessed the development of vaccines and treatments that saved countless lives and restored a semblance of normalcy, a newfound respect for medical science blossomed. However, Bartlett harbours a concern that the urgency to return to a pre-COVID world might inadvertently lead to a diminished view of medical science’s importance, including funding challenges.

The pandemic reinforced the urgency of partnering with industry to expedite the translation and commercialisation of research, a cause he has long championed. His dedication remained unwavering, serving as a testament to his commitment to making a tangible impact on public health.

Professor Bartlett envisions a brighter future shaped by young minds eager to embark on the path of science and medical research.

He encourages aspiring students to recognise the opportunity and responsibility science entails – the ability to effect positive change in the lives of those less fortunate. Bartlett’s journey underscores that a career in science is not only intellectually stimulating but also holds the promise of fulfilling a higher purpose.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Professor Bartlett acknowledges the interplay between natural aptitude and diligent effort during his formative years; he claims both attributes were pivotal to his journey’s success, enabling him to surmount challenges and advance his understanding.

While each step of his journey has been marked by achievement, Bartlett is humbled by the impact his research has made on lives worldwide. Yet, his measure of success extends beyond personal accolades. To him, success is embodied in the journey of the medicines he helps develop, ushering them from laboratories to clinics, and ultimately, positively transforming patients’ lives. Moreover, he finds fulfilment in nurturing the growth of researchers he has mentored, watching them flourish and create their own successes.

Professor Nathan Bartlett’s story is one of inspiration and dedication, a testament to the profound influence of science on our lives.

His journey illuminates the path that those who dedicate themselves to scientific exploration tread, as they tirelessly work to unlock the mysteries of the world and forge a better future for all.
