Dr Myles Young is an Associate Professor in the University of Newcastle’s School of Psychological Sciences.
Through his research, he is hoping to provide a better understanding of how men’s physical and mental health influence each other. He is also interested in how men’s ways of thinking influence their health behaviours and how ‘gender-tailored’ programs (that are designed specifically for men) can help increase the participation of men in health research.
Recently, Dr Young’s studies explored whether varying key aspects of psychotherapy (e.g., the location) leads to improvements in men’s engagement and clinical outcomes.
Dr Young was awarded his PhD from the University of Newcastle in 2015. He also completed a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons 1A) at the University of Newcastle in 2009. To date, he has published more than 65 peer-reviewed research papers and been awarded >$8 million in competitive grant income.
He has also won national research and teaching awards, including the BUPA Emerging Health Researcher of the Year (2019) and a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching.
In 2025, Dr Young received the HMRI Director’s Award for Mid-Career Research Excellence.
