Nisha Thacker is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle, with a research focus on paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diet, and the gut microbiome. She works clinically within the IBD service at Gastroenterology department based at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and is actively involved in both clinical care and translational research aimed at improving outcomes for children living with IBD.
Her research interests include the role of diet and environmental exposures in the development and management of paediatric IBD, the impact of medical nutrition therapy on disease remission, and the influence of the gut microbiome on disease activity and long-term health. She has contributed to research exploring pre-diagnosis dietary and environmental factors in multi-ethnic paediatric IBD populations and is involved in prospective studies assessing nutrition-based therapies using clinical, biochemical, and intestinal ultrasound outcomes.
Alongside her research and clinical work, Nisha is passionate about improving access to evidence-based nutrition education for patients and families. She is involved in developing family-friendly educational resources, contributes to multidisciplinary collaborations, and supports community awareness initiatives focused on gut health and IBD.
