Professor Peter Gibson

Professor Peter Gibson has been conferred a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Newcastle for his contribution to medicine through his dissertation on Inflammation in Airways Disease.

A higher doctoral degree is awarded to a leader in the medical field who has extensive published works in monographs and referred journals.

Along with a discourse explaining this body of work, a higher doctorate is awarded by a panel of international experts in the field.

A Doctor of Medicine is recognised internationally and represents a substantial achievement in the field.

Professor Gibson’s work spans decades as a doctor who cares for people with respiratory diseases and a clinical scientist investigating the mechanisms and treatments for asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), cough and other airway disorders.

Co-Director of the HMRI Viruses, Infections/Immunity, Viruses and Asthma research program, along with the UON Priority Research Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Diseases, Professor Gibson has combined his work as a respiratory physician at the John Hunter Hospital with research to improve outcomes for those living with respiratory diseases.

His research, clinical practice and participation in guideline panels has brought research developments into focus and into effective healthcare interventions for people living with breathing disorders.
