Giles Devaney

Biography

I completed my Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2019, before completing a Masters of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) at the University of Sydney in 2022.

Since 2019, I have been conducting research into the management of trauma patients and hemodynamic instability under Professor Zsolt Balogh.

I completed junior medical training at South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District, and I am currently working as a Critical Care Senior Resident Medical Officer at Hunter New England Local Health District.

Research Interests

  • Trauma
  • Hemorrhage control
  • Perioperative medicine

Why did you get into research?

I was first introduced to research during my Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2019, and found the process extremely interesting.

As doctors, our clinical practice is guided by evidence based medicine and, as both a clinician and academic, I wanted to do my part to contribute to this evidence base.

What would be the ultimate goal for your research?

I am currently conducting research surrounding the management of unstable and complex trauma patients.

Due to the multifaceted nature of this subset of patients and their associated injuries, there are still areas of management with limited evidence. I hope that my research will be able to strengthen this evidence base and eventually contribute to improved clinical practice.

Future Focus

Improving the standard of care in the management of trauma patients; from better understanding of pre-hospital and emergency department care to improved optimization and management in the peri-operative period.
